What is OCES?
OCES stands for ‘Orientation Course for Engineers and Scientists’. All the selected candidates, who wish to join various units of ‘Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)’ through the ‘BARC Training Schools’ selection process, will have to successfully complete this Training Program. The Training Program has a strong academic flavor and covers fundamentals of nuclear science and technology in addition to discipline specific courses. All the successful candidates will be absorbed in the various units of ‘Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)’ as Scientific Officers. Additionally, candidates whose performance in the OCES program meets the stipulated requirements will be eligible for a Post Graduate Diploma or could earn credits towards a M. Tech/M. Phil. degree through ‘Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI)’ a deemed to be university.
I am a Engineering discipline candidate. What should I do?
This website is only meant for Online Applications in the Science disciplines. The Online Application Portal for Engineering disciplines will open after March 1, 2013. A link to the Online Application Portal for Engineering Applications will be provided on the home page of this website around March 1, 2013. Eligibility criteria and Selection procedure in the Engineering disciplines may however be ascertained by referring to the Information Brochure.
I am a Science discipline candidate. What should I do?
Please refer to the Information Brochure for details about Eligibility criteria and Selection process. Screening for Selection Interview in Science disciplines can be based on a valid GATE-2013 score or on the basis of the OCES-2013 Written Test in the Science disciplines of the BARC Training Schools to be held on February 24, 2013. Science applicants can opt for either one or both of these screening channels. Science applicants who meet the Eligibility criteria may fill the Online Application Form on this website. On completion of the Application Process, the candidate’s details together with photograph will be visible on a single page whose printout will be the Net Form/Hall Ticket for candidates opting for the OCES-2013 Written Test on February 24, 2013. Instructions about the OCES-2013 Written Test as well as venue information will be posted on this website in the 1st week of February, 2013.
What are the last dates of online submission of application for Science candidates?
Science candidates wishing to be considered for screening in to Selection Interviews only on the basis of a valid GATE-2013 score must submit the Online Application by March 31, 2013. Those wishing to be considered on the basis of the OCES-2013 Written Test alone or on the basis of both a valid GATE-2013 score and OCES-2013 Written Test must submit their Online Application before January 20, 2013. Candidates can apply before the declaration of GATE-2013 results and subsequently update their GATE-2013 score using the login-id and password provided to them. GATE-2013 score must be updated before March 31, 2013.
How many vacancies are there in each discipline?
The Selection Process for the OCES/DGFS programs of the BARC Training Schools is merit based and not against existing vacancies.
What is DGFS?
DGFS stands for ‘DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme’. All candidates, who secure admission to a M. Tech/M.Chem.Engg. program in select institutes and in select specializations listed in the Information Brochure, on their own (based on a valid GATE score) and who excel in the Selection Interviews of the BARC Training Schools are selected for DGFS. They are paid stipend and tuition fee to pursue the M.Tech/M.Chem.Engg. course. After successful completion of one-year course work at the DGFS-institute, the Fellows undertake project work, which is assigned and supervised jointly by a DAE and an institute guide. On successful completion of M.Tech/M.Chem.Engg., they are posted as Scientific Officers in DAE. On joining, they are required to first undertake a four-month Orientation Course at BARC Training Schools, which is meant to introduce them to specific academic requirements of the DAE programs.

Science Candidates who wish to appear for Science Written Test – Please note that registration is a two step process. Step 1 of the registration process has to be completed before 11:55 p.m. (IST) on 20/01/2013. Step 2 of the registration process has to be completed before 11:55 p.m. (IST) on 21/01/2013.
Candidates who applied for Science Written Test and who wish to update their GATE Score – This may be done by logging in to this website using Application Number as User ID and the password previously chosen by the candidate. Such update of GATE score has to be completed before 11:55 p.m. (IST) on 31/03/2013.
Candidates who wish to apply only on the basis of GATE Score - Please note that registration is a two step process. Step 1 of the registration process has to be completed before 11:55 p.m. (IST) on 31/03/2013. Step 2 of the registration process has to be completed before 11:55 p.m. (IST) on 01/04/2013.
Explain ‘Application Processing Fee’.
A non-refundable application-processing fee of Rs. 250/-(Two Hundred and Fifty) is chargeable from the applicants in General and OBC , Persons domiciled in Kashmir Division of Jammu & Kashmir State from 01/01/1980 to 31/12/1989 (Dom Kashmir) and Dependents of those who died in the riots of 1984 (Dep1984) categories. Women candidates and the candidates belonging to SC/ST and Dependents of Defence Personnel Killed in Action (DODPKIA) and physically challenged candidates are exempted from payment of application fee.Science Candidates can pay the Application Fee by downloading the challan from this website and using it to make the payment in any branch of State Bank of India. Candidates screened in to Selection Interview must produce the Challan at the time of Interview, failing which they may not be interviewed.
What is the nature of the Science Written Test?
The syllabus for the Science Written Test comprises the entire portion from Class XII onwards up to M.Sc. The Test has 100 multiple choice questions with negative marking for incorrect answers.
Is M.Sc. in Bioanalytical Sciences or Bioinformatics or Virology eligible for the OCES program?
M.Sc. in Bioanalytical Sciences or Bioinformatics or Virology are ineligible.
I want to apply for the Ph. D. program of BARC in the basic sciences. What should I do?
BARC conducts a Ph.D. program in the physical, chemical and life sciences. The Selection Process for this program is the same as that for the OCES program. Thus all OCES applicants in the Science disciplines have the option of additionally applying for the Ph.D. program. Candidates may also opt to be considered only for the Ph. D. program. The form for Ph.D. application can be downloaded from this website and submitted after following the instructions mentioned. OCES candidates applying for Ph.D. must mention their OCES Online Application number while filling the Ph.D. Application form and they will be considered simultaneously for both programs. No additional Application Number will be given to these candidates. There is no Application Fee for candidates who only wish to be considered for the PhD program in Basic Sciences of BARC.
